Still encouraged by Almandin’s win in the Melbourne Cup, a German racer claimed by Ireland, Best Solution, is aimed at the 2018 Melbourne Cup after winning the Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Berlin at Hoppegarten racecourse in Baden – Baden, Germany.
Best Solution is by Great Britain’s Kodiac from Al Andalyya of the USA, so this five-year-old bay horse is as international as they come.
The stallion has done a lot of racing and winning in Great Britain, especially at Newmarket. The race prior to the win in Germany found Best Solution taking the win in the Group 2 Princess of Wales Stakes. Both those wins came at 2414 metres. His longest run for a win was at 2435 metres, so this horse could be well suited for the Caulfield Cup if his connections so chose, but trainer Saeed Bin Suroor will have to find a way to coax another 800 metres out of Best Solution if he is to run and figure in the 2018 Melbourne Cup.
“It will be an interesting race, as there are two nice horses from Germany in the contest, but Best Solution did a nice piece of work recently and is ready for this,” bin Suroor told the Godolphin website. “He is set to go into quarantine on Thursday, September 13, for his trip to Australia.”
The early markets have Best Solution around $34, but that is almost meaningless at this juncture. The $34 price came from Sportsbet, while Ladbrokes will only offer $26.
The Melbourne Cup generally does attract a fair share of horses from overseas, so it would be unrealistic to look on this year as an exception.
For the time being, Kings Will Dream has the top line at $13 on Ladbrokes. The five-year-old, another Irish horse with USA blood, just ran in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400 m) for third, but he did win the Listed Handicap Mornington Cup at 2400 metres, which proves versatility, if nothing else.
