Big Orange had won the hearts of many in the UK and Australia with his bold front-running style and his huge fan club is now surely over-subscribed after James Doyle steered him a thrilling victory in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.
In the finish of the week in the race of the week, Big Orange stuck his long neck out to narrowly hold last year’s winner Order Of St George – part owned by Lloyd Williams – under Ryan Moore.
Big Orange has finished fifth and 10th in the last two renewals of the Emirates Melbourne Cup and many doubted his ability to front run over the 4000-metre trip of the Gold Cup.
But Doyle, replacing the injured Frankie Dettori, got the fractions right out in the lead and had enough up his sleeve to fend off the challenge of Order Of St George by a short head, with the pair six lengths clear of last year’s St Leger winner Harbour Law. Read More…
