Craig Newitt’s win aboard Mantastic at Flemington last week was far from his biggest in Melbourne, but the satisfaction he derived from it ran much deeper than an off-season open handicap.
It was Tasmania’s leading rider’s first win in the city he called home for more than 15 years since September 2017 and first at Flemington since partnering Spanish Reef to victory in the Rivette Series Final two months before that.
The thrill did not quite rival the nine Group 1 wins Newitt has experienced at ‘Headquarters’, which include two Newmarket Handicaps, two Australian Guineas, a Victoria Derby, Australian Cup and Lightning, but he admitted he got a special kick out of it.
