Oceanex Punches Melbourne Cup Ticket with Upset Win

Four-year-old New Zealand import Oceanex has booked her spot in this year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup thanks to a gun run from jockey Mark Zahra in Saturday’s Listed Andrew Ramsden (2800m) at Flemington.

The mare by Ocean Park went around as a $6.50 chance in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, beating home the heavily backed King Of Leogrance ($1.85) in one of the upsets of the day.

Zahra, who hopped on board for the first time in place of Tom Marquand, made full use of the inside draw to establish a spot just off the speed behind Warrnambool Cup winner Too Close The Sun.

The race looked close to over down the straight with the favourite leading at the 300m mark, but Zahra did a great job staying patient before looming up at the clock tower to grab the lead. Read More …
