Protectionist Has Plenty Of Admirers

17 July, 2015

It appears all is forgiven with defending Melbourne Cup champion Protectionist.

Although unplaced in four runs since last year’s Cup, Protectionist ($21) is still fancied by punters for this year’s great race.

Around 25 percent of wagers have gone on the imported stallion and he is well ahead of favourite Fame Game ($15) in the popularity stakes.

European import Terrubi, now with trainer David Payne at Rosehill, is the second best backed Cup contender, firming from $67 into $51.

“Protectionist did have some issues during the Sydney autumn carnival and was injured in the Sydney Cup. New trainer Kris Lees has a better understanding of the horse so punters are obviously willing to forgive and forget,’’ said’s Christian Jantzen.
