The six-year-old was trained in Germany before he won last year’s Cup and has not won a race since.

When first nominations were released today, 31 international entries were received with Japanese stayer Fame Game ($11) the early favourite.

Lonsdale Cup winner Max Dynamite is next on $15 ahead of Snow Sky and Hartnell ($17).

“It’s been a year between drinks for Protectionist, but that hasn’t stopped punters hoping for happy hour. He’s been well supported ahead of Fame Game and away from those two the money is well spread,’’ said’s Will Byrne.
