EXCITING northern hemisphere stayer Red Cardinal, who is equal favourite for the Melbourne Cup, could follow the same path as stablemate Protectionist did when he won the 2014 edition.
Red Cardinal won the Belmont Gold Cup in New York on Saturday and TAB promoted him to equal favourite, at $15, with Francis Of Assisi for the Melbourne Cup.
Red Cardinal, like Protectionist, is owned by Australian Bloodstock and trained in Germany by Andreas Wohler.
Australian Bloodstock’s Luke Murrell said there was a strong chance Red Cardinal could start in the Herbert Power Handicap at Caulfield on October 14. “With the quarantine being put back a week, it will mean a lot more horses are likely to be over to contest a race like the Herbert Power which could be a really strong race this year,” Murrell said.
